KUWAIT, Oct 10 (KUNA) -- The scheduled 10th Asia Cooperation Dialogue got underway here on Monday under sponsorship of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, with the foreign minister of the host Gulf state stressing that "economic security" should top strategies of the Asian nations.
Speaking at the inaugural session, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, expressed gratitude to HH the Amir for sponsoring "this crucial Asian event, saying in part, "Your sincere interest in the aspirations and affairs of the Asian nation will serve the causes of the peoples of Asia, and these issues will be included in the agenda of the meeting." Asian nations should seek to rise to the challenges and address issues of common interest. The extraordinary events happening in our nations warrant efforts that match the volume of these challenges, Sheikh Mohammad said, stressing that conferees should seek practical plans to meet aspirations of the Asian peoples.
"Economic security" should top the development strategies of the Asian nation, he said, adding that the forum would be an opportunity for these countries for exchanging dialogue, perspectives, experiences and notions for realising the common goals of the Asian countries.
Sheikh Mohammad indicated that Tajikstan would chair the next forum, and expressed hope that the conferees, through their agenda, would find means for ensuring prosperity for the Asian nation.
For his part, the Thai Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, the coordinator of the forum, Nonsrichai Julappong, extended congratulations to the State of Kuwait on the assumption of the Chairmanship of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue. He also expressed appreciation for hosting the 10th ACD Ministerial Meeting. "I would like to take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to Your Highness the Amir, the State of Kuwait and its people on the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Independence of Kuwait." The Thai official, in his capacity as the ACD coordinator, also thanked Iran for "the hard work and accomplishments during its chairmanship." "We are here today to renew our commitment to take stock of where we are and to set direction for our future cooperation for the benefit of our region, " he said, recalling that foreign ministers from 18 Asian countries, 10 years ago, agreed on the creation of the ACD, to strengthen "Asia's competiveness, by utilizing the diversity and rich resources in the continent as well as increasing the capability of Asia as a key player on the global arena." He commended Kuwait's proposed theme, "towards a better future for Asian Cooperation, which is highly appropriate." He added, "We are convinced that under the capable leadership of Kuwait, this theme could be translated into reality and practical implementation." In his statement, the Thai official indicated at the negative ripples reaching Asia from the global economic crisis, noting that Asia should "seize the opportunity for strengthening closer coordination and cooperation to propel Asia toward becoming a more active player and reinforce our relevancy in the world arena." Being the world largest and most populous continent with more than four billion people or 60 percent of the world population with high purchasing power, Asia represents a region of great potentials in all aspects.
He called for "Making use of our diversity by handling our diverse strengths in a way that they complement each other and bring benefits for all.
" In this regard, the goals set forth in the 10th ACD Meeting will help "guide us toward promoting ACD as an active result-oriented forum.
"We should strive to increase knowledge and understanding among Asian countries through learning and sharing experiences of success and failure in our cooperation in order to build better and strong Asia for our common endeavors." The Thai official called for cooperation from diverse parties in the Asian countries, namely the society, the governments and private sectors, to enhance the role of the ACD.
