Social Tensions In Algeria Being Handled, Says FM

Social tensions in Algeria are being handled and freedom of expression exists, says Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci.

"The social tensions, recently seen, concerned questions of purchasing power, which has been undermined by soaring prices induced by the global economic crisis," Medelci told a news conference held jointly with visiting Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Filipe Marques Amado here Monday.

"Politically, those among the trends present in Algeria, wished to express their views did so because in all of the country it is possible to speak," added the minister.

"Those who could not walk in Algiers were not prevented from speaking, they gave their point of view which was heard and relayed significantly by the foreign media," he noted.

Meanwhile, Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Tayeb Louh has announced that interest-free loans of up to 500,000 dinars (about US$6,800) will be awarded to young entrepreneurs to rent premises for setting up micro-businesses.

During a national meeting on employment here Monday, Louh said a decision was taken at the last Council of Ministers meeting on reducing the contribution rate of young promoters from 5.0 per cent to 1.0 per cent for projects whose total cost does not exceed 5.0 million dinars and from 10 per cent to 2.0 per cent for projects whose total cost exceeds 10 million dinars.

The minister added that this measure was likely to allow young people with limited resources to achieve their projects.

Moreover, Louh said, the state grants interest-free loans of up to 1.0 million dinars to young graduates wishing to open offices, consulting firms or lawyers' offices.
