Forum focuses on food security challenges

Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor Higher Colleges of Technology on Thursday opened the Gulf Intelligence Food Security Forum hosted by the institution at its Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) in Abu Dhabi city.

Sheikh Nahyan noted that lack of enough food resources threaten national and economic security of states as well as global environmental security.


“Hunger threatens the stability of governments, breaks societies and also endanger border security,” he further said.

Sir Bob Geldof, who has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on seven occasions, was given the Al Saqar Trophy by Sheikh Nahyan in recognition of his outstanding impact and leadership in mobilising the world and its leaders to take action to combat some of the most pressing humanitarian issues facing developing nations over the last three decades.

The trophy, which embodies the culture and history of the country, was designed by an Emirati student with desert sand from the country’s seven emirates. Geldof joins a distinguished list of previous recipients of the Al Saqar Trophy, who include Dr APJ Kalam, the Former President of India, King Gustaf of Sweden and Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the UK.
